FAQ

How is Neobed different from Giraffe Incubator?

Neobed uses the heated mattress to provide conductive heating while the Giraffe Incubator uses air ventilation to provide convective heating. The current heating method blows hot air directly into the incubator, which causes the babies to sweat too often. Our heating method prevents the babies from overheating and gives them consistent warmth.

Neobed uses music therapy to provide babies with a better sensory environment. The current Giraffe incubator does not have an integrated music system.

Neobed can be adjusted in different angles to provide inclines for the babies for better positioning. The inline would be slight enough for the babies to stay safe and comfortable.

How does the weight sensor work?

When the baby is put on the mattress, the inbuilt sensor will calculate the weight of the baby and send the information to Bedmasters, a database that contains all the vitals information of the baby.

Why is the bed designed as dome-shaped?

Dome-shaped bed design allows 360 degrees access. Having a dome-shaped structure also decreases the heat loss in the incubator, providing a better insulation environment.

What are the medical benefits of music therapy?

Music therapy helps to soothe the babies. Research shows that with soothing voices and music playing beside the infant, their respiration and the heart rate adjusts to a more normal pace and helps eliminate stress. Sound is also an important stimulant for the neurological development of the baby.

What are the features of the sound recording software, Neobed Sounds?

Neobed Sounds offers the capability of creating customized playlists with music for the baby. Parents can create an account on neobedsounds.com to create a playlist by choosing different songs and voices, like lullabies, nature sounds, and nursery rhymes. Parents can record their voices and say personalized messages like saying "hi" to their babies and emotional words. This feature is a great way for the parents to bond with the children when they are physically absent from NICU.

Parents can set the playlist to be replayed with a set frequency, like every 3 hours. The nurses are also allowed to manually stop or play the playlist according to the medical situation of the baby and their sleeping schedule.

What are the next steps in improving patient experience in NICU?

Additional features could be added to Neobed to help eliminate the use of wires in tracking the patient's health. For example, cameras could be added to the bed to help determine the heart rate by measuring the subtle changes in skin color.

Adding additional features that can mimic parent-child interactions would also be helpful. For example, the mattress could have different moving patterns to mimic soothing parental touch.

Non-invasive measurements of the sleep quality can be added as the next step. There is currently no very accurate way of measuring the sleep quality other than EEG, which requires electrodes to be placed on the head.
